Meta unveiled its lightest, most entertainment-focused VR device yet at Connect 2026 — and this time, IMAX is part of the pitch.

Meta VR Glasses, announced at Meta Connect on Wednesday, will launch next spring at $1,299.99. The device is five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, and is being marketed as the first IMAX-enhanced certified VR headset, with content partnerships including Disney+.

After years of scaling back its Metaverse ambitions, Meta is making another run at virtual reality — and this time, the company is betting on comfort and content rather than sheer immersion alone.

A Lighter Bet on VR

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg opened the reveal by acknowledging the company’s earlier pullback from VR hardware, saying Meta had deliberately built fewer devices while it waited for a real leap forward. He described the new glasses as exactly that: a device built to deliver the “same magical feeling of presence and immersion” as a headset, but shaped like ordinary glasses for the first time.

That framing matters. Meta’s previous VR hardware — the Quest line — has struggled with a persistent problem: bulk. The new glasses aim to solve it. Built with magnesium-alloy frames and powered by a separate computing “puck” that doubles as a battery pack and slips into a pocket, Meta says the headset is five times lighter than the Quest 3.

What’s Inside: Specs and Display

The hardware leans heavily on entertainment:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite
  • Display: Micro-OLED lenses with a “5K Infinite Display” at 37 pixels per degree
  • Audio/Video: Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support
  • Assistant: Built-in Meta AI, controllable by voice and hand gestures

The IMAX Angle

The standout claim is IMAX compatibility. Meta is calling its new glasses the first IMAX-enhanced certified VR device on the market, positioning them as one of the few consumer devices able to reproduce IMAX’s signature expanded aspect ratio outside a theater. Whether that certification lives up to IMAX’s theatrical standard is something reviewers will likely test once units ship.

Content Partners: Disney and 3D Movies

Meta has also lined up Disney as a launch partner. Starting in November, Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream select 3D titles — including certain Marvel films — through the platform, with some content designed to blend the viewer’s physical room into the on-screen experience, effectively turning movie-watching into something closer to a VR game.

Price and Release Date

Meta VR Glasses go on sale next spring, priced at $1,299.99 — positioning the device well above the Quest line and closer to premium mixed-reality hardware.
