BMW iX4 Arrives as an Electric X4 With Up to 428 Miles of Range
BMW has unveiled the iX4, the first all-electric version of its coupe-style X4. It sits on the same Neue Klasse platform as the iX3, and the headline number is a claimed range of up to 428 miles for the first version headed to the United States, just six miles short of the iX3’s 434.
Quick answers
- What is it? An electric crossover coupe, essentially the X4 body style on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture.
- How far does it go? Up to 428 miles for the iX4 50 xDrive, according to BMW.
- How fast does it charge? Up to 400 kW DC, adding as much as 183 miles in 10 minutes.
- When does it arrive? The first trim launches in March 2027.
- Where is it built? At BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, alongside the iX3.
Why the iX4 matters?
BMW’s coupe-style SUVs have always divided opinion. The original X6 drew heavy criticism when it appeared, yet it kicked off a whole segment, and plenty of rivals now sell the same idea. The iX4 is BMW applying that formula to an electric drivetrain, and the interesting part is how little it gives up compared with the iX3.
On paper the two are nearly twins. They share the same length (188.3 in), width (74.6 in) and wheelbase (114 in). The iX4 is lower, at 63.3 inches tall, which is 1.5 inches less than the iX3. That roofline is the whole trade: it looks sleeker, but you pay for it in space.
How far can the BMW iX4 go on a charge?
The iX4 50 xDrive, the first variant for the US market, is rated at up to 428 miles by BMW. The iX3 50 xDrive manages 434 miles, so the gap is six miles, even though both use the same 112.2 kWh battery and the same 463 hp dual-motor setup. (In Europe the battery is quoted at 108.7 kWh, but BMW says it is the same pack.)
That small deficit is consistent with a body that is a little less slippery in real-world terms than its numbers suggest, though BMW has not explained the difference. Treat 428 miles as a manufacturer figure for now. Independent testing will show what owners actually see.
How fast does the iX4 charge?
- DC fast charging: up to 400 kW, the same as the longest-range iX3
- 10-minute session: up to 183 miles added, one mile less than the iX3 50 xDrive
- AC charging: a 15.4 kW on-board charger comes standard

The M60 xDrive is the performance flagship. It comes standard with Adaptive M Suspension, sport steering and a limited-slip rear differential. BMW gave no range figure for it, and it will most likely fall short of the 50 xDrive, as power-focused versions usually do.
What is it like inside?
Thanks to the Neue Klasse underpinnings, the cabin follows the same layout as the iX3 and i3:
- A 17.9-inch central infotainment screen
- A slim display running pillar to pillar at the base of the windshield
- A 3D head-up display
- A voice assistant based on Amazon’s Alexa+ technology
Every iX4 gets a fixed glass roof and the M Sport package, which brings 20-inch M wheels, the M Sport braking system and blue calipers. The M60 steps up to 21-inch wheels, M Sport seats and a Harman Kardon sound system.
How practical is the BMW iX4?
The sloping roof costs space, and BMW’s European figures show it clearly:
- Trunk, seats up: 17.3 cu ft (490 liters), about 1 cu ft less than the iX3
- Trunk, seats folded: 56.5 cu ft (1,600 liters)
- Front trunk: roughly 2 cu ft, the same as the iX3
US numbers have not been published yet. If you regularly carry bulky cargo or adults in the back, the iX3 remains the more practical pick.
Can the iX4 power your home or gear?
Yes, with the right hardware. The iX4 supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) through the BMW Multifunction Charger, which has separate 120-volt and 240-volt plugs. BMW says owners will need adapters for these functions, sold separately.
- V2L lets the car run power tools, appliances or camping gear from its main battery.
- V2H can keep a house running during a grid outage.
- V2G can send power back to the grid, provided the necessary equipment is installed.
What we still don’t know?
- US pricing
- The M60’s range and charging figures
- Real-world range from independent tests
- US trunk volume and rear-seat space
- Whether the iX4 40 xDrive will come to the US
